Charles Zana designs homes, boutiques, hotels and cultural institutions, conceiving architecture, interiors, gardens and the surrounding landscape as a whole. Each commission brings a new set of circumstances, a story to unfold. A landscape can suggest a colour. A family’s collection can set the direction of a house. Charles Zana looks for what a place could become, questioning an established layout, opening up a view or bringing seemingly unrelated elements together.
Volumes, circulation, light and acoustics shape the way a space is lived in. Art enters the process from the outset: a painting or sculpture can determine a proportion, establish a sightline or shift the balance of a room. Historical references become tools for reinvention. A classical arrangement is reconfigured around contemporary habits; an inherited technique is explored through a new material. Each project tests what tradition can offer the present, and how the present can transform it.
The studio carries this thinking through design and construction, drawing on longstanding collaborations with artists, craftspeople and engineers, and adapting to local teams and working practices abroad. The finished space should feel effortless. What interests Zana is an almost cinematic recognition: entering somewhere new and feeling, through a proportion, a material or a particular light, that one has somehow lived there before.
